Payments & Payment Methods
What payment methods are available?
You can pay in the myVRN-App using a debit card, credit card or PayPal.
Please note that our payment service provider LOGPAY may carry out a credit check when you register or add a new payment method. For details, please refer to the applicable terms and conditions.
Why can't I specify a SEPA direct debit?
Since July 2024, SEPA has no longer been available for new customers. Existing customers with a SEPA mandate can continue to use it, but can no longer change their SEPA details.
The decision to no longer allow SEPA for new customers or for changes to direct debit arrangements is based on security concerns, particularly regarding the Deutschland-Ticket, which is sold via the app. This monthly cancelable offer necessitated additional security measures.
Registering a payment method is the basis for purchasing a ticket; it is not possible to differentiate between the specific ticket subsequently purchased (Deutschland-Ticket, tickets from the fare system, or Luftlinientarif). Furthermore, providing account details alone is no longer sufficient to effectively prevent misuse. Therefore, all payment methods require additional verification upon registration. For SEPA, this would mean reliable identity verification, e.g., via services like Verimi (bank or photo identification), which would entail additional effort for both customers and the VRN.
In practice, there has also been a significant decline in the use of the SEPA direct debit scheme. Only about 10 percent of customers still use it in the myVRN app. Therefore, VRN has decided to no longer allow SEPA for new registrations in the myVRN app.
The following alternative payment methods are currently available:
• Debit Card/Credit Card (with 3D Secure):
Most bank customers now automatically receive a debit card (Visa or MasterCard) from their bank. This card functions like a credit card but requires a balance and debits the bank account directly. These cards can already be added as a payment method in the myVRN app (you may need to activate their use for online purchases with your bank beforehand).
• PayPal:
PayPal is a widely used payment service provider with high security standards and direct transaction verification. In addition to a debit card or credit card, a bank account can also be linked to PayPal.
How do I register a debit card as a payment method?
Both debit and credit cards are available as payment methods. Further information about debit cards and how to add them to your VRN account for the myVRN app can be found here.
How do I add PayPal (with a bank account or debit card) as a payment method?
PayPal can be added as a payment method to your VRN account for the myVRN app. You can link not only a credit card, but also a debit card or bank account to your PayPal account. Further information about PayPal and how to add your PayPal account to your VRN account for the myVRN app can be found here.
Can I change my means of payment later?
You can switch between debit card, credit card andPayPal at any time. You can also switch between different debit cards, credit cards, and PayPal accounts.
Customers with a SEPA mandate can switch to a debit card, credit card or PayPal.
I would like to remove my payment method completely from the app. How can I do that?
In myVRN, you can use all information functions without an account. A means of payment is only required for bookings, purchases and subscriptions.
If you do not want this, you must delete your myVRN account.
Deutschland-Ticket Subscription
All information about the Deutschland-Ticket can be found at https://www.vrn.de/deutschlandticket .
Tickets for Occasional Trips
I want to travel by bus and train occasionally. Which ticket should I choose?
For occasional journeys, the myVRN-App offers a range of ticket options, including Einzel-Ticket (single tickets) and 5-Fahrten-Ticket(5-journey tickets). You can purchase these in the Ticket Shop or directly from the fare information in Plan Journey.
For an even simpler option, use VRN-Bestpreis. Just complete a Check-In before your journey and a Check-Out when you arrive. The app automatically calculates the lowest available fare for your trip.
Ticket Purchase
Can I buy tickets in the myVRN-App?
Yes. You can purchase a range of tickets in the myVRN-App, including Single Tickets (Einzel-Ticket), 5-Journey Tickets (5-Fahrten-Ticket), Day Tickets (Tages-Ticket) and the Deutschland-Ticket subscription.
Alternatively, you can use VRN-Bestpreis for individual journeys. Simply complete a Check-In before your journey and a Check-Out when you arrive. The app will automatically calculate the lowest available fare for your trip.
To purchase a ticket, use Plan Journey and select a connection or open the Ticket Shop directly.
Can I purchase tickets for my child or another person?
Yes. When travelling together, you can purchase tickets for other people in the myVRN-App. However, Deutschland-Ticket subscriptions can only be purchased for yourself.
To purchase a ticket for another person, select the required ticket via Plan Journey or the Ticket Shop. Under “Ticket Holder”, tap “Me” and enter the first and last name of the person who will use the ticket.
You can also use the parent-child payment function (Bezahlungsübernahme). Further information is available here.
Can somebody travel with me on my ticket?
This depends on the ticket you are using.
Children under 6 years of age travel free of charge with any valid VRN ticket. The same applies when travelling with a Deutschland-Ticket.
With a Tages-Ticket (VRN Day Ticket) or Tages-Ticket Familie (VRN Family Day Ticket), an unlimited number of your own children and grandchildren up to and including the age of 14 can travel with you free of charge. A Tages-Ticket Gruppe (VRN Group Day Ticket) allows up to 4 additional passengers aged 6 and over to travel together.
When using VRN-Bestpreis, you can add up to 4 travelling companions during Check-In. Each travelling companion is charged 50% of the calculated VRN-Bestpreis fare.
If you are travelling with others, a Tages-Ticket (Day Ticket), Tages-Ticket Familie (Family Day Ticket) or Tages-Ticket Gruppe (Group Day Ticket) may be the more economical option. We recommend comparing fares in Plan Journey before travelling.
Can I print tickets purchased in the myVRN-App?
No. Tickets purchased in the myVRN-App are issued exclusively in digital form and must be presented on your smartphone during ticket inspections.
Travel at the "VRN-Bestpreis"
What is "VRN-Bestpreis"?
VRN-Bestpreis is the easiest way to travel on buses and trains within the VRN network using the myVRN-App. Simply complete a Check-In before your journey and a Check-Out when you arrive. The app automatically calculates the lowest available fare for your trip.
There is no need to understand fare zones, compare ticket options or select a ticket in advance. VRN-Bestpreis does it for you, ensuring you always pay the best available price.
How is the VRN-Bestpreis fare calculated?
After your Check-Out, VRN-Bestpreis calculates the fare based on the straight-line distance between your departure and destination stops. The app then automatically compares this fare with the corresponding zone-based fare and charges the lower price.
With the built-in fare caps, you will never pay more than the price of the corresponding 5-Journey Ticket (5-Fahrten-Ticket) in a single day or more than €68 per month (€72 from January 1).
Can I bring travelling companions when using VRN-Bestpreis?
Yes. During Check-In, you can add up to 4 travelling companions to your journey.
Each travelling companion is charged 50% of the calculated VRN-Bestpreis fare. Children under 6 travel free of charge and do not need their own ticket.
You can also select 1st Class during Check-In. In this case, 1st Class travel authorization is automatically booked for all travelling companions.
Can I use VRN-Bestpreis for 1st Class travel?
Yes. If you would like to travel in 1st Class, simply select this option during Check-In. A supplement will be added to the calculated VRN-Bestpreis fare.
You can also combine 1st Class travel with up to 4 travelling companions. In this case, the fare for all travelling companions is calculated based on the 1st Class VRN-Bestpreis fare.
Can I purchase VRN-Bestpreis in advance?
No. With VRN-Bestpreis, you can only start a journey from your current location. Simply complete your Check-In at the stop where you are and begin your journey.
To use VRN-Bestpreis, location services must remain enabled throughout your journey.
It is not possible to complete a Check-In for a future time or from a different location.
Why is €5 reserved on my payment method during Check-In?
When you start a journey with VRN-Bestpreis, a temporary €5 authorization hold is placed on your saved payment method. This ensures that the fare can be charged once your journey is complete.
After you successfully complete your Check-Out, the authorization hold is released and replaced by the actual fare for your journey. Of course, you will only be charged the fare that applies to your trip.
Please note: Although the release of the authorization hold is sent to your payment provider immediately, it may remain visible in your banking app or payment account for some time.
How do I complete a Check-In for VRN-Bestpreis?
You can start a Check-In for VRN-Bestpreis in the myVRN-App in several ways:
- Via the “VRN-Bestpreis” menu option
- Directly from the fare information in the journey planner using the “Check-In” button
- Via the “Check-In” button in the Ticket Shop
Can I complete a Check-In for VRN-Bestpreis directly from the journey planner?
Yes. You can start a Check-In for VRN-Bestpreis directly from the journey planner in the myVRN-App.
First, plan your journey using “Plan Journey” and select your preferred connection. An “from” price will be displayed automatically. This is the VRN-Bestpreis, which calculates the lowest available fare for your journey.
Tap the displayed price to open the fare overview. There, you can either purchase another suitable ticket for the selected journey or start your Check-In for VRN-Bestpreis directly.
Before completing your paid Check-In, you can adjust additional options, such as adding travelling companions or selecting 1st Class.
What should I do if the wrong stop is detected?
Make sure the myVRN-App has Location Permission set to “Always Allow”, as VRN-Bestpreis requires Location Permission from Check-In to Check-Out.
If the wrong stop is displayed, use “Search Nearby” to select the correct one. This can occasionally happen in areas with multiple nearby stops.
Why can’t I complete a Check-In?
To complete a Check-In, you must be logged in to the myVRN-App, have a valid payment method stored, and be able to make purchases.
You also need an active internet connection, Location Permission enabled, and a nearby stop selected as your starting point.
I accidentally completed a Check-In for VRN-Bestpreis. What should I do?
If you started a Check-In by mistake, no fare will be charged if you complete a Check-Out within 2 minutes at the same stop and have not left your starting location.
To avoid accidental Check-Ins, we recommend planning your journey first using “Plan Journey”. You can then start VRN-Bestpreis directly from the selected connection using the “Check-In” button.
My bus or train is delayed, but I’ve already completed a Check-In for VRN-Bestpreis. What should I do?
No problem. You can complete your Check-In for VRN-Bestpreis before boarding. Your fare is calculated based on the journey between your Check-In and Check-Out stops.
If your travel plans change after Check-In, for example because you take a different connection or mode of transport, that's not a problem either.
However, we recommend completing your Check-In shortly before your journey begins to ensure your trip is recorded correctly.
Do I need to allow Location Permission while travelling with VRN-Bestpreis?
Yes. To use VRN-Bestpreis, Location Permission must be set to “Always Allow” throughout your journey. This allows the myVRN-App to track your trip and calculate the correct fare.
Location Permission is also required for Check-Out, so your destination stop can be detected automatically
Do I need to keep the myVRN-App open while travelling with VRN-Bestpreis?
No. You can use other apps on your smartphone during your journey. The myVRN-App will continue to run in the background.
However, you must remain logged in and not force-close the app. If you log out or disable the app or required background functions, such as Location Permission, an automatic Check-Out will be triggered.
What should I do if I need to transfer while travelling with VRN-Bestpreis?
Nothing. If you are continuing your journey and transfer to the next suitable connection, your VRN-Bestpreis journey remains active and no additional Check-In is required.
However, VRN-Bestpreis is only valid for one-way journeys. If you want to travel back towards your starting point, you must first complete a Check-Out and then start a new journey with a new Check-In. Round trips and return journeys cannot be made within the same VRN-Bestpreis journey.
Do I need an internet connection while travelling with VRN-Bestpreis?
Yes. VRN-Bestpreis requires an internet connection, but not continuously. If your connection is temporarily unavailable after Check-In, your ticket will still be displayed and can be shown during ticket inspections.
However, we recommend maintaining an internet connection throughout your journey. It is needed for the myVRN-App to transmit your location, record your journey correctly, and complete the Check-Out and fare calculation.
How do I show my valid travel authorization during a ticket inspection when using VRN-Bestpreis?
During an active VRN-Bestpreis journey, the inspection screen in the myVRN-App serves as proof of your valid travel authorization.
You can access the inspection screen either by opening “VRN-Bestpreis” from the app menu or by going to Ticket Shop > Purchased Tickets and selecting your active journey. Then show the displayed inspection screen to the ticket inspector.
Important: You must remain checked in for the entire journey and only complete your Check-Out after leaving the public transport vehicle.
How do I complete a Check-Out for VRN-Bestpreis?
After leaving the public transport vehicle, open your active VRN-Bestpreis journey in the myVRN-App. You can access it either via “VRN-Bestpreis” in the app menu or via Ticket Shop > Purchased Tickets.
Select your active journey and tap “Check-Out”. The app will automatically detect your current stop so you can complete the Check-Out.
Once your Check-Out is complete, you will receive a confirmation and see the fare charged for your journey. As always, VRN-Bestpreis automatically calculates the lowest available fare.
Check-Out: My destination stop is not displayed. How do I select the correct stop?
During Check-Out, the myVRN-App automatically suggests the nearest stop as your destination stop.
If the correct stop is not displayed, tap “Search Nearby” to view other stops close to your current location. Only stops within approximately 500 metres of your location are available for selection.
Once you have selected the correct stop, confirm your choice to complete the Check-Out.
Why can’t I complete a Check-Out?
o complete a Check-Out, you need an active internet connection. The myVRN-App requires this connection to determine your location and successfully complete the Check-Out.
What happens if I forget to complete a Check-Out?
If you have enabled notifications for the myVRN-App, you may receive a “Forgot Check-Out?” notification when your journey data indicates that you may have forgotten to end your trip. You can then choose whether to continue or end the journey.
If no Check-Out is completed, the system will automatically end the journey at a later time based on the available journey data.
Important: Always complete your Check-Out manually as soon as your journey ends. Automatic Check-Outs are intended as a fallback only and may not reflect your actual destination stop. Fares resulting from an automatic Check-Out cannot be adjusted retrospectively.

Technical Issues
My D-ticket is not being displayed
Tickets that are currently valid can be found in the side menu under “My tickets”. If you have booked a ticket for a later date - e.g. for the next month - you will find this in Ticketshop → Purchase overview → “Valid in the future”.
Expired tickets - e.g. from previous months - can be found there under “Expired”.
The ticket inspector cannot check my ticket with his device
In order to be able to read the barcodes on electronic tickets, the verification devices must have a suitable digital key. Sometimes the keys of transport companies or transport associations change and have to be redistributed to the verification devices. If this is not done in a timely manner, the devices cannot read our tickets.
In addition to the central barcode, our tickets also have other features that allow the inspection staff to verify their authenticity: the dynamic element of the 2-minute clock running backwards indicates that the inspector is not seeing acopy (screenshots of tickets are not possible). Also, the surname, first name and date of birth below the barcode can be compared with the passenger's ID.
My mobile phone is broken. How can I access my D-Ticket?
To access the D-Ticket, you must have a functional smartphone that meets the requirements for correct use of the myVRN-app. In addition, the myVRN-app must be installed on the device. You must also be logged into your VRN account. If your current smartphone is not functional, you will need a replacement device on which the myVRN-app must also be installed. You can log into your VRN account from any device. It is not possible to issue a replacement ticket by any other means.
I want to buy a D-ticket, but it's not working.
To purchase a D-Ticket, you must have a VRN account and have registered a valid payment method (debit or credit card or PayPal). If these requirements are met, you can purchase a D-Ticket. If the purchase of the D-ticket is declined, this is usually because the payment provider (issuer of the debit or credit card or PayPal) has declined the payment. We therefore recommend that you contact and clarify the situation with the payment provider (issuer of the debit or credit card or PayPal). Once the situation has been successfully clarified, you can try to make the purchase again.
